A quick trip to Portland, a historic cement town named after the first cement works in Australia. The remains of early Lime Kilns built in 1888 are still visible along with the larger Commonwealth Portland Cement Company site that commenced production in 1902.
Located in central New South Wales, it's about 163km from Sydney or just under 2 hours drive.
The town was previously known as the parish of Cullen Bullen, Thomas Murray kicked off the production of Lime in 1863, later building 2 Lime Kilns after 1869. Alexander Currie and George Raffan would go onto acquire a site and build the 2 Kilns seen still standing today.
Worth a visit if you're in the area or heading to Lithgow.
