In the late nineteen eighties researchers began measuring the testosterone of the same American men and kept doing it for fifteen years. The median total testosterone was five hundred and one at the start. By the final round it was three hundred and ninety one. Same age brackets, not the same men simply ageing. A man of sixty in two thousand and four had measurably less than a man of sixty had fifteen years earlier, and it held up after adjusting for obesity, smoking, medication and chronic illness. That decline is real and documented. What follows is what the evidence does and does not support about the four cheap seeds everyone recommends for it. THE STUDY EVERYONE CITES FOR FENUGREEK, AND WHAT IT ACTUALLY SAYS Every video on this subject points to the same trial from the University of Mary Hardin Baylor, and describes it as showing increases in total and free testosterone plus gains in strength, energy and sexual function. I read the paper. It was forty nine resistance trained men with an average age of twenty one. Total testosterone was never measured in that study at all. The between group difference in free testosterone was addressed by the authors themselves, who wrote that it had limited relevance because it did not significantly change over time. And their stated conclusion was that daily consumption of the supplement alongside resistance training has no anabolic effect on the hormonal status of resistance trained males. No anabolic effect. That is the conclusion of the study presented to you as proof that it works, in a population of twenty year old athletes, in videos aimed at men over sixty. THE ZINC FIGURE THAT IS NOT REAL You will hear that forty five percent of adults over sixty are deficient in zinc, attributed to the National Institutes of Health. That figure is not on the NIH zinc page. What is on it is that roughly fifteen percent of American adults aged nineteen and over take in less zinc than the estimated average requirement, and that older adults are at higher risk of marginal intakes. There is no forty five percent and no breakdown for the over sixties. The recommended intake for adult men is eleven milligrams a day. That part is real. THE PUMPKIN SEED CITATION The Journal of Medicinal Food is offered as the source for pumpkin seeds resetting your hormonal master switch. The study most often pointed at examined pumpkin seed oil inhibiting testosterone induced enlargement of the prostate, and the subjects were rats. The finding concerns the prostate rather than raising testosterone in men, and if anything describes blunting a testosterone driven effect. WHAT IS ACTUALLY TRUE Zinc is genuinely required by the cells that manufacture testosterone, and low intake genuinely becomes more common with age. Aromatase genuinely converts testosterone into estradiol and is genuinely concentrated in abdominal fat. The hypothalamic pituitary gonadal axis is genuinely the chain of command, and if it is disrupted nothing downstream works properly. All four seeds are genuinely cheap, genuinely nutrient dense, and genuinely worth eating. Watermelon and pumpkin seeds in particular are among the least expensive sources of zinc and magnesium available anywhere. What has not been shown is that any of them raises the testosterone of a man who is not deficient in the first place. Correcting a deficiency and boosting a normal level are two entirely different things, and nearly everyone selling something blurs the two deliberately. PLEASE READ THIS PART Testosterone that is genuinely low is a medical finding, not a mood. It can be a symptom of something that needs identifying, including pituitary problems, thyroid disease, sleep apnoea, or a medication already being taken. If you feel the way these videos describe, the useful next step is a morning blood test, not a bag of seeds. It is cheap and it tells you whether there is anything here to fix at all. If you take medication or have a history of hormone sensitive cancer, have a conversation with your doctor before adding concentrated seed or lignan supplements. Flax especially. Nothing here is medical advice or a substitute for your own physician. A QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTS Have you ever had your testosterone actually measured, or are you going off how you feel? Every video on this subject, this one included, is worth nothing to you if you do not know where you are starting from.
