Everything You Need to Know About CELPIP | Revise Education

If you're applying for Canadian PR or citizenship, there are two versions of the CELPIP test. Sit the wrong one and it doesn't count for your application. That mistake happens more than you'd think, because the two versions have almost the same name. In this video I cover what CELPIP actually is, which version you need for which application, how the four components work, how scoring maps to the Canadian Language Benchmarks, and how it compares to IELTS for Canadian immigration. This is Episode 02 of Everything You Need to Know, by Revise Education. A series covering every English and credentialing exam you might need for study, work, registration or migration. —————————————————— WHAT'S IN THIS VIDEO —————————————————— 00:00 The mistake that invalidates your application 00:45 What CELPIP is 01:45 CELPIP General vs General LS 03:00 The four components 04:15 CELPIP scores and CLB levels 05:45 CELPIP vs IELTS for Canada 07:00 How to prepare —————————————————— GENERAL OR GENERAL LS? GET THIS RIGHT —————————————————— CELPIP General tests all four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. This is the version used for Canadian permanent residence and Express Entry. CELPIP General LS tests only Listening and Speaking. This version is mainly used for Canadian citizenship applications. If you're applying through Express Entry, you need CELPIP General. Not General LS. Say that back to yourself before you book. —————————————————— SCORING AND WHAT YOU ACTUALLY NEED —————————————————— CELPIP scores run from 1 to 12, and they correspond to Canada's Canadian Language Benchmark levels, written as CLB. There's no single Express Entry pass mark. What you need depends on which immigration program you're applying through. The Federal Skilled Worker Program generally requires at least CLB 7 in all four skills, which means CELPIP 7 in each section. But hitting the minimum isn't the same as being competitive. Your language score contributes to your CRS points, and higher scores can push that total up meaningfully. CLB 9 and above is particularly valuable. Aiming only for the minimum can leave you sitting in the pool while people with stronger language scores get invited ahead of you. Always check current requirements at canada.ca before booking. —————————————————— CELPIP vs IELTS FOR CANADA —————————————————— CELPIP isn't your only option. IRCC also accepts IELTS General Training for Express Entry.
