In May 1756, at the opening of the Seven Years' War, a French invasion force landed on the British island of Minorca and laid siege to its last stronghold, Fort St Philip. Admiral John Byng sailed to relieve it with an undermanned, hastily repaired fleet, fought an inconclusive battle in the Mediterranean, and then withdrew on the unanimous advice of his own captains rather than risk what ships he had left. The fort held out alone for two more months before surrendering.
