Broad Peak has largely remained in the shadow of neighboring K2. But the mountain has its own long history of first ascents, unfinished climbs, remarkable survivals and expeditions that ended in disaster. This documentary traces that history from Hermann Buhl, Kurt Diemberger and the Austrian first ascent in 1957 to the Polish expeditions on Broad Peak Central, Maciej Berbeka’s 1988 and 2013 winter attempts, Carlos Carsolio’s solo new route, the Markus Kronthaler recovery, the 2013 Iranian expedition, Kim Hong-bin’s final climb and the July 2026 avalanche that killed ten climbers, including Nirmal Purja. Archival footage and photography sources include: Nanga Parbat 1953 — documentary directed by Hans Ertl Kurt Diemberger Collection — photographs from the 1957 Broad Peak and Chogolisa expedition Andrzej Zawada Archive — footage from the Polish winter expeditions The Jerzy Kukuczka Archive — archival photographs and expedition footage Maciej Berbeka — personal photographs from the Berbeka family archive Adam Bielecki — footage from his YouTube channel 2013 Iranian Broad Peak Expedition Archive and Ramin Shojaei — expedition photographs and route material Vittorio Sella — photographs from the 1909 Karakoram expedition Additional historical documentaries about K2, Broad Peak and the Karakoram DISCLAIMER: This video is made for educational and documentary purposes.
