What Is Going On With Asia's Deadliest Volcano?

ERUPTION ALERT LEVEL 3 — SUNDA STRAIT: Indonesia's geological agency raised Anak Krakatau to Level III (Siaga) on 2 July 2026 and has kept it there, with 19 eruptions logged across June and July, ash to 1,500 metres, a 3-kilometre exclusion zone around the crater and a 5-kilometre advisory for vessels crossing one of Southeast Asia's busiest straits. This is the volcano whose southwestern flank slid into the sea on 22 December 2018 and killed 437 people along more than 300 kilometres of Javan and Sumatran coastline — with no earthquake, no ground shaking and no warning at all. A study published in April finally measured how much of that collapsed flank has grown back, using 29 topographic surveys stretching back to the 1930s. The volume answer is 90 percent.
