Typhoon In-Fa strengthens south of Japan, Cyclone Murasu's remnants soak India, the Election Day front reaches the Southeast — and Carlsbad gets a sunny 74°, the warmest day of its week. Your Daily Forecast zooms from the whole planet all the way in to Eddy County.
WORLD — Typhoon In-Fa (JTWC Warning 48, 06:00 UTC) strengthened overnight to 92 mph (80 kt, gusts 100 kt), pressure 974 mb, at 25.0°N 138.3°E, about 164 NM west of Iwo To — the Pacific's only tropical cyclone, forecast to turn northeast and go extratropical east of Japan by Friday with no landfall expected. In India, Severe Cyclonic Storm Murasu's remnant weakened to a depression by 5:30 AM IST over east Telangana near Khammam (IMD); 24-hour rain reached 24 cm in Telangana and 21 cm in West Godavari, and the first damage estimate (APSDMA) is at least 2 dead in Bapatla district, crops damaged on 52,459 hectares, and ₹344 crore in losses. The NHC lists ZERO active storms but watches three areas, including EP95 southeast of Hawaii (70% 7-day formation chance) and a low expected south of Bermuda (40% in 7 days). South Africa has Level 4 severe thunderstorm warnings for KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga.
NATIONAL — The cold front pushes east: SPC's Day 1 outlook (AC 040534) puts the Southeast into the southern Appalachians under a MARGINAL RISK — isolated severe wind gusts and perhaps a brief tornado, with a morning storm cluster from northeast Alabama into northwest Georgia. WPC has a MARGINAL RISK of excessive rainfall for the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys and southern Appalachians and for Southeast Florida, with training showers producing rainfall rates of 1–1.5 in at times and an isolated flash-flood threat. Snow develops over the higher elevations of the Central Rockies today, and Thursday's nationwide flash-flood risk drops below 5% (WPC).
NEW MEXICO — Only ONE active alert remains statewide: a Flood Warning (NWS Albuquerque) for the San Juan River at Shiprock until 4:40 PM today — minor flooding with the stage at 17.3 ft (flood stage 15.5 ft) after an 18.6 ft crest, now falling. Everywhere else is sunshine: Albuquerque sunny, high 66°, tonight's low 36°; Santa Fe sunny, high 57°, tonight's low 33°.
