Korean history in17 minutes: how a peninsula only 100 km wide at its narrowest survived two thousand years of invasion, famine and division by turning dependence into discipline. We trace three kingdoms, two unifiers, two devastating invasions, one division and one economic miracle — and show why geography, bottleneck genetics and relentless outside pressure shaped everything that followed, from Unified Silla's Buddhist state-building technology to Goryeo's naval federations under the Mongols, Joseon's tributary silence, and South Korea's climb from lower income per person than sub-Saharan Africa to a global semiconductor hub. Along the way: the 1885 telegraph line built for a war Korea never intended to win, Admiral Yi Sun-sin holding Myeongnyang with thirteen ships, the Sambong problem, the IMF collapse of 1997, and the still-unfinished northern file.
Peninsula squeezed between China, Japan and the northern steppe empires, Korea was repeatedly pulled into its neighbours' orbits — yet each catastrophe triggered the same three reflexes: fortify the coast, train a civilian army, and never fight the last battle. Founder effects and serial bottlenecks left the lowest genetic diversity in East Asia, while invasions forced reinvention: Buddhism imported as state-building technology, Buddhism-literate bureaucracies, military aristocracies, naval fortresses on Ganghwa Island, Confucian meritocracy, mass nationalism from the streets in 1919, and an export machine built under siege-level pressure. This is the story of how a maximally constrained geography was converted into a maximum of cultural specificity.
