MIDNIGHT HALL — The Slow Fade of Swing 45 tracks | 3 hours 16 minutes | 1930s–40s style jazz that slowly dissolves into vinyl crackle, run-out groove and white noise. Imagine a dance hall at midnight. The band is playing a bright, swinging set from a worn-out record. With every track the needle sinks deeper into the groove: the crackle gets louder, the melody starts to skip, the horns drift out of tune, and in the end the music is swallowed by the hiss of the record itself. This album tells that story in five parts. It is built to be played from start to finish, like one very long record side. PART I — BRIGHT SWING (tracks 1–10) Clean, warm jazz in the style of the 1930s and 40s: small-combo swing, big band, hot club gypsy jazz, Dixieland, jump blues, stride piano, vibraphone swing and slow ballads. Trumpet, trombone, alto and tenor sax, clarinet, violin, banjo, tuba, upright bass, piano, vibraphone and brushed drums. Only a light dusting of vinyl crackle. PART II — WORN GROOVES (tracks 11–20) The same era, but the sound is slightly distorted, narrow and wobbly, like an old shellac disc. Vinyl crackle and a faint run-out groove sit under the music. Every track ends with a few seconds of the locked groove going round and round. PART III — THE RECORD SKIPS (tracks 21–30) The vinyl noise gets louder. The melodies begin to glitch: the needle skips and repeats a phrase, the band drops out for a moment, a tape-stop slows everything down, then the tune picks up again as if nothing happened. PART IV — SMOKE AND SURFACE NOISE (tracks 31–40) Thick vinyl crackle, pops, rumble and surface noise. The jazz of the 30s and 40s is still there, but muffled, as if heard from the next room. Each track fades into a long run-out groove. PART V — THE GROOVE RUNS OUT (tracks 41–45, 69 to 8 minutes each) Inspired by the idea behind The Caretaker's "Everywhere at the End of Time": old ballroom music slowly forgotten. Slow minor-key ballads drown in heavy reverb, low drones, white noise and loops that repeat and fade. The record is torn away mid-phrase, the needle falls into the run-out groove, and the music tries to come back. The last track ends abruptly. Note: Part V has loud noise sections and abrupt cuts. Please lower the volume before you listen on headphones. TRACKLIST / TIMECODES 0:00 01. Uptown Sunrise Stomp 4:00 02. Velvet Hour 7:00 03. Hot Club at Midnight 12:00 04.
