NINJA — JAPAN’S SECRET WARRIORS | The Entire History

Step beyond the legend and discover the real history of the ninja... Japan’s secret warriors... Long before the black costume, throwing stars, supernatural disappearances, and impossible martial arts of modern fiction... there were real people known as shinobi... scouts, spies, messengers, infiltrators, intelligence gatherers, guards, and covert operatives shaped by centuries of conflict in Japan... In this long-form bedtime history documentary, we follow their story from medieval Japan... through the mountain communities of Iga and Kōka... the Sengoku age... the wars of Oda Nobunaga... the destruction of Iga... Tokugawa Ieyasu’s escape after Honnō-ji... and the historical figure behind the legendary name Hattori Hanzō... We explore how shinobi actually served powerful warlords... how men from Iga and Kōka entered Tokugawa service... and how their role changed as Japan moved from civil war toward political stability. The documentary also examines important surviving ninjutsu texts, including the Bansenshūkai and Shōninki... and what these manuscripts can genuinely tell us about the historical shinobi. We also separate history from some of the most famous ninja myths... Was there really a universal black ninja uniform? Could ninja truly disappear? What does the historical evidence tell us about the kunoichi? And how did practical covert warfare become associated with supernatural abilities and secret martial arts? The story continues into the nineteenth century... the arrival of Commodore Perry... surviving Iga intelligence traditions... the collapse of the Tokugawa shogunate... and the Meiji Restoration, when the old feudal institutions that had supported hereditary warrior service disappeared. Yet the ninja did not disappear from memory... Through theater, literature, film, television, manga, martial-arts culture, and video games... the image of the ninja spread far beyond Japan and became one of the most recognizable figures in global popular culture. During the centuries when real shinobi operated... much of the world had never heard of them... After their profession disappeared... the world learned the word ninja. Settle in... lower the lights... and journey through the complete history of Japan’s Secret Warriors...
