Magnolia 44:25 One of the better live recordings of JJ Cale in my opinion was made at the famous El Mocambo Tavern in Toronto, Canada. On Wednesday, September 1st, 1993, he played to an up close and personal crowd of around 450. He toured quite extensively around the US and Canada during the year, with Christine Lakeland and Jimmy Karstein (aka Jose Murdoch) helping out. The acoustic setting plays right into Cale’s hands as comes across as so much more relaxed and comfortable in this small venue. This concert sees just Cale and Karstein performing. What makes this concert special is the live broadcast of most of the show by local station CBC-FM. The microphones especially set-up for the event add so much to the clarity of the whole experience. Recently, on July 29th, the live recording of this concert was repackaged with the title of Footprints in Dust, and released on Spotify and Amazon Music. The individual tracks are also available to hear on YouTube. The recording has been around for a while, previously released in 2019 as Live At El Mocambo. This 45-minute plus recording is also one of the better examples of Cale interacting with the audience. He’s quite chatty, initially complaining about how hot it was and that maybe the air-conditioner was broken. The crowd loves it, JJ seems to as well, and the result is rather special. Ten ditties from across his career, with all of the crowd pleasers, but also some newer stuff deliciously thrown in. John Weldon "JJ" Cale (December 5th, 1938 – July 26th, 2013) was an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Though he avoided the limelight, his influence as a musical artist has been widely acknowledged by figures such as Mark Knopfler, Neil Young and Eric Clapton, who described him as "one of the most important artists in the history of rock". He is considered to be one of the originators of the Tulsa sound, a loose genre drawing on blues, rockabilly, country, and jazz. In 2008, Cale and Clapton received a Grammy Award for their album The Road to Escondido. Cale died at the age of 74 in San Diego, California, on July 26, 2013, following a heart attack.
