Edinburgh's Royal Mile: Holyrood to Edinburgh Castle - 4K walk - Slow Scenes UK

For the final video in our Edinburgh series, let's take a stroll up the famous Royal Mile! We start outside the post-modern Scottish Parliament Building (Pàrlamaid na h-Alba) which opened in 2004. Just across the road is the Palace of Holyroodhouse which was built in 1678 and is the official Scottish residence of the Sovereign (*not* Balmoral Castle!). We'll pass various historic buildings along the way before arriving at Edinburgh Castle. Dating back to at least the 11th century (though not necessarily the same building) the castle stands atop an extinct volcano and was used as a fort for both Scottish and English monarchs for centuries. The last military battle to take place at the castle was the Jacobite rising of 1745 which saw Edinburgh captured and under Jacobite rule. The castle was also used as a prison until 1811 when 49 prisoners escaped through a hole in the wall and the castle was deemed unviable to hold prisoners, although it was briefly used again for this purpose during World War 1. The castle and the surrounding Old Town was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. Just over 2 million people visited the castle in 2025.
