In this project, I build a custom artisan bread knife and matching cutting board from beautiful old-growth red oak. The board is finished using food-grade mineral oil, followed by a homemade cutting board conditioner made from two parts mineral oil and one part beeswax.
Along the way, I show the entire process, from shaping and fitting the knife handle to finishing the board and applying the conditioner. And yes... during a blade test-fit, things got a little too real. One slip of the knife reminded me just how sharp these blades can be.
To finish the project, I put the bread knife and board to work on a loaf of homemade bread.
Materials Used:
• Old-growth red oak
• Bread knife blade
• Food-grade mineral oil
• Beeswax
• Homemade board conditioner (2 parts mineral oil, 1 part beeswax)
