Shark touches Kronebreen glacier at Svalbard Islands

This video shows the mission performed on June 23rd, 2015 by the USSV (Unmanned Semi Submersible Vehicle) Shark working in the Kongsfjord at Svalbard Islands in the framework of the UVASS project. The goal of the UVASS (Unmanned Vehicles for Autonomous Sensing and Sampling) project is to use UMVs (Unmanned Marine Vehicles) i.e ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles), AUVs (Unmanned Underwater Vehicles), USVs (Unmanned Surface Vehicles), USSVs (Unmanned Semi-Submersible Vehicles) and UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) for performing atmospheric and sea-ice data sensing and sampling in dangerous places (i.e. close to fronts/tongues of glaciers) either difficult to access or not accessible to human beings. In particular, this video shows that Shark succeeded, making its way through a maze of small icebergs, in reaching and touching the Kronebreen glacier. During the mission Shark collected 8 water bottles by using a water sampler mounted on a trailer (little orange boat) and CTD (Conductivity, Temperature and Depth) data before returning safely back to the support vessel.
