His lunchbox comes first. After that, three meals that are all mine.
It's been raining in Tokyo for a month now — cool and properly autumn for September, if a little gloomy. I packed my husband's lunch before he left: sweet potato rice, chicken soboro, scrambled egg, and a homemade instant miso soup (miso and dried seaweed wrapped up, ready for hot water).
The leftover soboro became my breakfast, folded into a tofu-and-pancake-mix dough and pan-fried until crisp. In Japan we call this mottainai — throwing away food that's still good feels disrespectful, to the food and to the people who made it.
Then into central Tokyo for a salon treatment. My husband tells me he wants me to stay beautiful, so I sat there silently chanting "be beautiful." Lunch was a seasonal pho, loaded with spices.
By evening I wasn't very hungry, so dinner was a simple soup, made with kasane-ni — layering vegetables according to the yin and yang nature of each food — plus the can of tomatoes I had left over, homemade onion koji, and black beans. Eating light, or skipping a meal, isn't holding back for me. It's listening to my body.
