President Trump and Chinese Communist Party General Secretary Xi Jinping met at the White House on September 24 to discuss the world’s most consequential bilateral relationship. This is the third time the leaders of the two superpowers have met in the second Trump term, and marks Xi’s first visit since President Trump launched a trade war in July of 2018. Since then, many foreign affairs analysts have come to view U.S.-China relations as akin to a cold war. Conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, a new tech revolution and domestic problems in China and the United States, however, have postponed any decisive reckoning between Washington and Beijing. President Trump describes relations as good and calls Xi Jinping a friend. What’s really going on? And what does the summit portend for the future of the U.S.-China relationship?
