Every year the group met up for Thanksgiving in whichever American city made sense, and the videos people still quote back to him were filmed in the middle of those weekends.
Lake Markham is a photographer, musician, and writer who played Dade in the Filthy Frank series and went on to create and star in his own web series, Bald Internet Man.
Lake opens up about middle school in the mid 2000s, when YouTube was new enough that you could watch something and think you could do that, and about frame by frame animating a lightsaber into a fight with his neighbour. He talks about the difference between showing up to perform in somebody else's series and having to drive the whole machine himself, which he calls a very steep learning curve. He gets candid about the shift in his own performances between the two characters, why he was readier to be outrageous at the younger end of it, and how much a cowboy hat and a Venom jacket change what you are willing to do. Lake walks through where Bald Internet Man actually came from, a group of friends in Nashville working coffee shop and bar jobs, watching the city get torn down and replaced, and turning all of that into characters. He also reflects on the artist who designed the cartoon faces for the merch, and on the graphic novel version that never quite made financial sense.
An essential watch for anyone whose favourite work was made for free with their friends.
