The fire will watch for you. 🔥 A traveller's camp in the Japanese mountains, late autumn, well after dark. A small fire burns inside a ring of stones, sparks lifting and going out, orange light reaching just far enough to catch the red maples at the edge of the clearing. Beyond that the forest is deep blue and completely still. A wandering ronin sits on a low rock with his back to us, hat and sword set down on the stone beside him. He has stopped for the night. He isn't listening for anything anymore. This piece is inspired by "TAKIBI" (焚火) — a fire built outdoors, at a stop along the way. A fire does something very old for whoever is sitting at it: it marks a circle, and inside that circle nothing more is required of you today. You don't keep watch. You don't decide where to go next. The fire holds the dark back on its own, and the only job left is to stay warm until morning. Shakuhachi stays low and even, the way a fire sounds when it has settled into its coals. Koto comes in small and bright, like sparks going up with no particular destination. Nothing here builds toward anything, because the day is over and nothing is coming.
