VELES The Herd Beyond the Fog | Slavic Dark Folk Journey Late autumn has reached the last pastures. Radomir, a cattle drover, notices that one black bull has disappeared from the herd. Its tracks lead away from the familiar grazing lands, through flooded meadows, black water and ancient oak country. At first there are only signs: a familiar bell sounding from the wrong direction, hoofprints disappearing into water, strange cattle standing silently in the fog. Then Radomir finds a herd that does not belong to any village he knows. And beside the missing bull stands Veles. In Slavic tradition, Veles is one of the great ancient powers associated with cattle, the earth, wealth, waters and the chthonic world beyond ordinary human life. In this GP Navi story, he is not portrayed as a monster or thief, but as the keeper of an older order — a power whose relationship with animals reaches beyond human ownership. The black bull is injured. Veles tends to it calmly, and when he begins walking deeper beneath the ancient oak roots, the animal follows him willingly. Radomir follows too. Beyond the oldest roots, he sees something no living herdsman was meant to see: another pasture beneath dim green-grey twilight, where silent cattle graze in the mist and the distant hall of Veles rises from earth and roots. The boundary between the worlds opens. The black bull begins to cross. For one impossible moment, half of the animal remains in the wet autumn earth of Yav, while the other half has already entered Veles’s pasture. Radomir reaches the threshold and touches it — but he cannot follow. Veles waits on the other side. The bull crosses completely. Then the gateway closes. Radomir is left alone among the roots. By morning, the first frost has covered the pasture. The bull does not return. Radomir walks back into the human world carrying no proof of what happened — only the knowledge that somewhere beyond the fog, another herd still grazes under the protection of Veles. This episode closes one of GP Navi’s final late-autumn stories and begins the transition toward winter.
