The Crow's Plan There was a great tree. A crow lived there with his wife. In the hollow of that same tree, a black snake also lived. Whenever the female crow laid eggs, the black snake would eat her chicks. Because of this, the crow and his wife suffered great sorrow. So one day the crow went to his friend the jackal and said, "O friend! That black snake must somehow be killed. Please suggest a plan." The jackal suggested a plan. Hearing it, the crow was very pleased. After that, the crow flew to the city. There, in the pond of the king's palace, the women of the royal household were absorbed in playing in the water. Their clothes and ornaments were placed on the steps of the pond. The crow went there, picked up a gold necklace, and set off toward the forest. Seeing this, the king's guards followed the crow. The crow reached the forest and dropped the necklace into the hollow of the great tree, then flew far away. The guards arrived there and saw the necklace in the hollow. Then the black snake living there came out in anger. The guards killed it with blows of their sticks, and took the necklace away. After that, the crow lived happily with his wife.
