What does it take to prepare a chorus for the monumental journey of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection”?
Dr. Robert Istad, Artistic Director of Pacific Chorale, takes us inside Mahler’s masterpiece and the extraordinary role of the human voice in bringing its journey from struggle and uncertainty to hope and transcendence to life.
Istad explores the meaning behind Mahler’s choral writing, why understanding every word matters (even when singing in another language), and how Pacific Chorale prepares to enter after spending much of the symphony in silence.
He also discusses his musical partnership with Pacific Symphony Artistic & Music Director Alexander Shelley and the collaborative process of bringing a conductor’s vision to life through hundreds of voices.
Experience Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection,” with Alexander Shelley, Pacific Symphony, Pacific Chorale, Miah Persson and Dame Sarah Connolly, October 1-3 at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall in Costa Mesa.
