SHARLSTON: Wakefield Parish #19 of 30

Mining once again in a Wakefield parish. Who would have thought that? Well it is West Yorkshire after all and the mining of coal was so important in this county, as it was in much of Yorkshire and Northern Derbyshire, but ask anyone around here about the practice of extracting coal from the ground and they'll tell you that it couldn't have been what it was without the plethora of coal mines in Wakefield. There were four that were local to the parish I've got for you today, although before the mines existed, there were some existing mines already here on the common. The area has been mined extensively since medieval times, but of course when the companies came along and built the large scale collieries we are all used to, they were favoured over the smaller ones. Check out the rows of terraces in the smaller village to the North here. One of them is called Long Row, and it's not exactly short as the name might suggest. Each house cost the colliery company around £100 to build and water was supplied via a handy local reservoir which never had anything to do with the collieries! There are some railway lines that run and in some cases ran, through this part of the world. We'll see both the active line and one of the inactive lines in this one, along with some rugby themed landmarks, because as well as coal, you won't ever be far away from a rugby ground in West Yorkshire. "Back o' t'wall" as it was lovingly called has pride of place in the centre of the village.
