Dak Prokay Trei (ដាក់ប្រកៃត្រី) is a traditional Cambodian fishing technique that showcases the ingenuity and deep connection between the Khmer people and their water-rich environment.
The term Prokay refers to a specific type of long-line fishing gear, and Dak means "to set" or "to place." This method is primarily used in the Tonle Sap lake, its connecting rivers, and large floodplains during the receding water season.
How it Works
Unlike simple rod-and-reel fishing, Dak Prokay is a passive, large-scale method designed to catch medium to large-sized fish.
• The Setup: It consists of a very long, heavy main line (often hundreds of meters long) made of durable nylon or synthetic rope.
• The Hooks: Shorter lines, called "snoods" or "leaders," are attached to the main line at regular intervals. Each leader has a sharp, sturdy hook at the end.
• The Bait: Depending on the target species (like Catfish or Giant Barb), fishermen use various baits, including small live fish, snails, or even fermented bait to attract fish in murky waters.
• Placement: The line is usually weighted to sit near the riverbed or suspended at a specific depth using floats. It is typically set in the evening and checked early the next morning.
Cultural and Economic Importance
For many fishing communities in Cambodia, Dak Prokay is more than just a way to get food; it is a seasonal ritual and a primary source of income.
• Efficiency: It allows a single fisherman to "fish" in many spots simultaneously across a wide area.
• Sustainable Knowledge: Successful placement requires an intimate understanding of water currents, moon cycles, and fish migration patterns.
• Community: Preparing the lines and bait is often a family activity, involving the mending of hooks and the sharing of traditional knowledge from father to son.
