Most will be done with Sonic and on Extreme Gear. I will aim to beat all rival opponents at Level 8 or higher. However, the Level 10 rivals are practically impossible to beat - DO NOT attempt to take on level 8 or higher rivals until you have a strong grip on how gadgets work.
