Eighty Years Rooted in Hong Kong: Walking Together with the Community Passing the Legacy Through Song, Connecting to the Future
"From Age to Youth" is more than just a theme song celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong. It is a heartfelt record of how the Diocese, for eight decades, has breathed the same air as this city and actively built it up together. This song carries not only history, but a continuous calling—to transform faith into action and to weave companionship into our daily lives.
The song conveys three core beliefs:
1. Through parishes, church organizations, and religious orders, the Church has always actively entered every corner of society to respond to the needs of each era.
2. "Synodality" is the living witness of the entire People of God—every believer lives out their calling in their own role, walking with society and especially drawing near to the poor and the vulnerable.
3. Through the combined efforts of everyone in the Church, love and hope can transcend generations to create tomorrow.
Looking back at post-war Hong Kong, scarcity and hardship were the reality of daily life. As the Diocese was newly established, clergy and sisters did not remain within their churches; instead, they proactively went into refugee camps, resettlement estates, and remote villages. They personally built churches, schools, and clinics, even bringing classrooms to rooftops. From distributing food and treating the sick to providing vocational training and caring for the elderly and orphaned, the Church labored and rebuilt together with the people of Hong Kong.
This was not distant aid, but the beginning of a journey of side-by-side growth and deep-rooted coexistence with the people of Hong Kong.
For eighty years, the Diocese’s original mission has never wavered. The parishes, schools, Caritas services, and various other church groups found throughout Hong Kong today are all testimonies nurtured from this belief in "being of one heart with the people and actively walking alongside them." Looking to the future, the Diocese will continue to promote "synodality," encouraging the lay faithful to participate in pastoral work, balancing the mission of evangelization with social service, and bringing God’s love to vulnerable communities. The Diocese also actively nurtures the young and steadfastly maintains its educational role, accompanying the younger generation as they build the foundation of their lives, ensuring the Church’s legacy in Hong Kong.
The lyrics of "From Age to Youth" are simple yet warm. They aim not only to record the Church's wholehearted dedication to healthcare, education, social welfare, and pastoral care, but also to depict how the Diocese became a pillar of support for many in crucial moments, silently shaping the spiritual fabric of this city.
"Companionship" and "Walking Together" are the threads running through the entire song—from "the lost, the last, the least" to "young and old hand in hand with love built bridges span," and then to "through synodality and sharing the truth, we pass faith from age to youth." Every line echoes the image of a Church that is always present and actively participating.
As we sing this song, we not only look back at the grace of the path we have traveled, but we also look ahead to our mission for the future—may this faith, rooted in service and lived out through accompaniment, continue to sprout, grow, and extend in this new era, reaching every moment yet to come.
