For decades, the mysterious Tarim Basin mummies were often associated with migrations from western Eurasia because of their appearance, clothing, and material culture. Ancient DNA changed that interpretation dramatically.
A genomic study of Bronze Age individuals from the Tarim Basin found that the earliest sampled Tarim populations were descended from a deeply ancient, genetically isolated Asian population rather than recent migrants from the western steppe or Central Asian farming societies. Researchers concluded that these communities were genetically isolated while still adopting technologies and cultural practices from neighboring peoples.
The study analyzed individuals dating roughly from 2100–1700 BCE and found ancestry connected to an ancient North Eurasian-related genetic lineage. Evidence from dental calculus also showed the use of dairy products, highlighting how culturally connected these communities could be despite their genetic isolation.
In this documentary, we explore the Tarim mummies, the Xiaohe cemetery, ancient DNA, Bronze Age Xinjiang, migration theories, archaeology, and how genetics completely reshaped the debate over who these mysterious desert people really were.
