The British, aiming to crush Mahdist resistance in eastern Sudan and relieve Egyptian garrisons, marched inland from the Red Sea port of Suakin. After a tough victory at the Battle of El Teb, they encountered Mahdist forces again at Tamai. Graham’s force of around 4,000 men, including infantry, artillery, and naval brigades, formed two square formations—a common tactic against massed attacks. During the battle, one square was temporarily broken by a fierce Mahdist assault, leading to close-quarters fighting. Despite the shock, British discipline held, and they regrouped, repelling the attackers with rifle fire and artillery. 00:00 Introduction 00:43 The rise of the Mahdi 01:11 The Battle of El Obeid 01:39 The British forces 02:06 The Mahdist forces 02:35 The British camp 02:48 The Night skirmishes 03:06 The British bombardment 03:32 The British form up for battle 03:57 The British cavalry attack 04:47 The main battle begins 06:03 The Mahdists reach the British square 07:13 The Mahdists are pushed back 07:37 The Mahdist surprise attack 08:21 The Mahdists withdraw 08:37 Aftermath
