A ten-minute SpaceEngine tour in VR on Steam Frame: the Solar System, Pluto and Charon, the Cat’s Eye Nebula, and a final stop at the black hole in Cygnus X-1. Pluto gets a visit, of course. The flight path is scripted, with gentle orbits and time to look around at each stop. The head movements are mine, wearing the headset. Solar System time is accelerated to show the planets turning. SpaceEngine runs on a PC and streams to the Frame through SteamVR. This is a 1440p60 recording of the desktop VR mirror, so you’re watching a flat view of the headset experience. Music and a short introduction were added afterward. Made to show what’s possible. This is a non-monetized showcase. SpaceEngine © Cosmographic Software LLC. Install Steam, SpaceEngine, and SteamVR on your PC. SpaceEngine runs there; a local installation on the Frame isn’t needed for this method. 2. Set up the Frame’s connection to your PC using the included wireless adapter and Valve’s instructions: https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/st... 3. On the Frame, connect to the PC for VR streaming without launching a game. Wait for SteamVR on the PC to show that the headset is ready. The menu wording may vary by software version. 4. Launch SpaceEngine and select the SteamVR launch option. Enter Planetarium mode. If you get a flat or curved virtual screen, check the VR connection and launch choice. 5. For this route, download the tour scripts below and follow their README. The script flies the camera while you look around freely. The README includes staging and stop commands. TOUR SCRIPTS: Post a comment and we'll make them public. OUR FEDORA SETUP This recording used a Fedora workstation with Steam and SteamVR beta, and SpaceEngine running through Proton Experimental. Windows users can skip these Linux-specific notes; we haven’t tested this setup on Windows. For a startup crash on our graphics configuration, we added this per-game launch option under SpaceEngine → Properties → General: MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=zink %command% It routes OpenGL through Vulkan. It isn’t a universal requirement; remove the added option to undo it. SteamVR error 1202 also required restoring hardware video encoding support in the Fedora Mesa packages. If you hit that error, check your operating system’s graphics-driver and codec guidance.
