In 1987, Buick built a car that challenged everything America thought it knew about performance. It wasn’t a Corvette. It didn’t have a V8. And it wasn’t supposed to be this fast.
It was the 1987 Buick GNX.
With a turbocharged 3.8-liter V6, a sinister all-black appearance, and engineering developed with ASC/McLaren, the GNX became one of the most surprising American performance cars of the 1980s.
In period testing, this unlikely Buick delivered acceleration that challenged the Chevrolet Corvette C4 and embarrassed cars that looked far more powerful.
But just as the GNX became a legend, it disappeared.
Only 547 were ever built.
So how did an ordinary Buick Regal evolve into a Corvette challenger? What made the GNX so special? And why did Buick stop building it after just one year?
In this documentary, we explore the forgotten history of the Buick Grand National and GNX — from the early turbocharged V6 experiments and NASCAR influence to the engineering breakthroughs, shocking performance figures, and the end of an American automotive icon.
The Buick GNX wasn’t supposed to change the rules. But for one unforgettable moment, it did.
