Madeira Airport (IATA: FNC), officially Cristiano Ronaldo Madeira International Airport, is located in Santa Cruz on the island of Madeira, about 18 km east of Funchal. Opened in 1964 and famously extended over a valley on concrete pillars to lengthen its short runway, it is renowned as one of the more technically demanding airports for pilots due to its coastal location, mountainous terrain, and crosswinds. It serves as the main gateway to Madeira, connecting the island to mainland Portugal and destinations across Europe. Madeira's runway is the reason this airport is famous. Originally far too short and hemmed in by the Atlantic on one side and mountains on the other, it was extended in 2000 onto a deck supported by around 180 concrete columns, some of them 70 metres tall. The extension won the IABSE Outstanding Structure Award in 2004, and the approach is still regarded as one of the more demanding in Europe because of the crosswinds coming off the terrain.
