He Bought Her First Baby CARRIAGE. 22 Years Later He Married Her: Frances Cleveland The official story is a fairy tale. On June 2, 1886, a bachelor president married a 21-year-old woman from Wells College in the Blue Room of the White House, and America fell in love with her. But the paper trail behind that wedding tells a stranger story. The groom was her late father's law partner, the man who had run her family's affairs since she was eleven. The worst newspaper story of his life broke on July 21, 1884, her twentieth birthday. It was about a widow named Maria Halpin, an asylum, and a baby boy named Oscar Folsom Cleveland, after Frances's own father. Two years into the marriage, the young First Lady had to sign a letter to the whole country saying her husband did not beat her. Then came a secret surgery on a yacht, a reporter branded a liar, and a promise to a White House doorman that came true to the day. And somewhere in Buffalo, a boy grew up under another name.
