This week we discuss the NG digraph. We know that digraphs are two letters that come together to make one sound. Students are already familiar with the digraphs CH, SH, TH, WH, and CK. Now they learn that N and G also make one sound when they come together at the end of a word or syllable. Students notice that the NG pattern always shows up after a single vowel. ANG makes a long vowel sound (ex: bang, sang), while ING, ONG, and UNG make short vowels sounds (ex: ring, song, hung). ENG only appears as a digraph chunk in one English word (length), but the letters do appear next to each other in words like English and avenge. As they review the meanings of each word on the list, students label nouns, verbs, and adjectives. They revisit the concept of a plural suffix with the word LUNGS. They also review suffix rules and irregular past tense verbs.
