Deep in Hefeng, Hubei, the Bajiao River winds through mountains, villages, and a series of old hand-dug tunnels. In summer, people come here to swim in the clear river water, relax by the river, and fish. But what makes this area especially unusual are the mountain villages hidden beyond the tunnels. Several of these old tunnels were originally dug by local villagers to create a passage through the mountains. Some are narrow, rough, and still show the raw rock walls left behind from years ago. On this drive, I followed the roads around the Bajiao River, traveling from the mountains down into the valley, passing through these old tunnels and exploring the villages connected by them.
