I thought I understood positional chess… until I actually tried putting it into practice.
After finally reaching 1200 Elo, I'm realizing that improving at chess isn't just about spotting tactics, memorizing openings, or avoiding blunders. It's also about understanding positional chess, creating long-term plans, improving piece activity, and knowing what to do when there isn't an obvious tactical move.
In today's episode of Road to 1500, I'm exploring new chess openings and trying to apply positional chess principles in my games. But understanding chess strategy and actually playing good positional chess are two completely different things!
As an adult chess improver, I'm discovering just how difficult it can be to balance tactical awareness with strategic thinking.
In this episode, we're exploring:
Positional chess for beginners and intermediate players
How to create a plan in chess
Understanding pawn structures and weak squares
Improving piece activity and coordination
Learning new chess openings and their strategic ideas
The difference between positional chess and tactical chess
Common mistakes players make around 1200 Elo
What is positional chess?
I've learned that positional chess focuses on improving your position through long-term strategic ideas rather than relying exclusively on immediate tactics. Concepts like piece activity, pawn structure, king safety, weak squares, and controlling important files can help develop better plans and ease decision-making.
Follow along as I document the wins, losses, mistakes, and lessons from my chess improvement journey.
