Surrender of the Philippines (1942) | Bataan & Corregidor WWII Documentary

Cut off from reinforcement and surrounded by an advancing Japanese military, American and Filipino forces withdrew to the Bataan Peninsula in the opening weeks of 1942. What followed was one of the most desperate defensive campaigns of World War II. *Surrender of the Philippines (1942)* continues the story begun in *Defense of the Philippines (1941)*, following the execution of **War Plan Orange**, the defense of Bataan, the evacuation to Corregidor, and the eventual surrender of U.S. and Filipino forces in the Philippines. Under General Douglas MacArthur, American and Filipino forces conducted a carefully planned withdrawal toward Bataan, trading territory for time while attempting to keep their remaining forces intact. Once on the peninsula, approximately 80,000 troops—along with thousands of civilians—faced a rapidly worsening situation. Food, ammunition, medicine, and other supplies were limited. Soldiers were placed on reduced rations as disease, exhaustion, and malnutrition increasingly weakened the defenders. Despite these conditions, the defense of Bataan continued for months. The film examines the fighting along Bataan's defensive lines, the Battles of the Points and Pockets, Japanese attempts to break the American and Filipino positions, and the extraordinary resistance that disrupted Japan's timetable for further operations in the Pacific. In March 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered *General Douglas MacArthur* to leave the Philippines for Australia. Command eventually passed to **Lieutenant General Jonathan Wainwright**, while Major General Edward P. King Jr. commanded the forces remaining on Bataan. On April 9, 1942, with his exhausted forces no longer capable of mounting an effective defense, King surrendered the troops on Bataan. Approximately 72,000 prisoners were subsequently forced north in what became known as the **Bataan Death March**. But the fight for the Philippines was not yet over. The fortified island of **Corregidor**, guarding the entrance to Manila Bay, continued to resist until Japanese forces landed on the island in May. With his defenders overwhelmed and with no realistic prospect of relief, Wainwright made the decision to surrender. The defense of the Philippines had ended—but American and Filipino forces had resisted for approximately five months, delaying Japanese operations during some of the darkest months of the Pacific War.
