The story I am sharing today was told to me by a man named Adnan, who called from France. Adnan had a love marriage; he was in love with a woman named Iffat who lived in his neighborhood. Although the marriage was difficult to arrange, the couple was happy afterward. Eventually, however, his wife began demanding a separate home, which led to frequent arguments. She also became resentful due to his low income, creating a rift between them; trivial matters began to overshadow their love. At one point, his wife started sleeping separately. Following another argument, she left the house to live with her mother and, a year later, obtained a divorce through the court. Adnan was unhappy, but the court’s decision was final. Later, he secured admission to a university in Paris, France. In Paris, he would attend university during the day and work at a Bengali restaurant in the evening. As time passed, Adnan ended up buying that restaurant, though he never returned to Pakistan. Over the course of seven years, he managed to build a house and buy a car in Pakistan. Upon his return, his mother insisted that he marry a woman named Sobia. For the first month of his marriage to Sobia, Adnan did not engage in sexual relations with her, but later, his feelings shifted, and he began having a physical relationship with her. Three months later, he returned to France. One day, he received a call from his first wife, and their old love was rekindled; they effectively forgot that they were divorced. Adnan traveled to Pakistan to meet his ex-wife, and they engaged in sexual relations. Adnan began covering his ex-wife’s expenses, all while Sobia remained completely unaware that her husband was involved with another woman. A son was born to Adnan (with Sobia), and Adnan visited Pakistan six times to meet his ex-wife. Now, he is asking me how he can extricate himself from this situation with his ex-wife. I told him that moral integrity requires him to remain faithful to his wife, Sobia; he should seek forgiveness from Allah and completely sever all ties with his ex-wife. Adnan was a regular viewer of my videos; he admired me and was willing to follow my advice, as he had grown weary of that lifestyle. I suggested that he leave his ex-wife behind and focus solely on his wife, Sobia. Adnan blocked his ex-wife and promised that he would no longer engage in zina (illicit sexual relations).
What would your advice be?
Sometimes, we wish to abandon a bad habit, but we require the assistance of another person—as well as validation for our decision—to do so.
