How do we move from admitting defeat over alcohol to becoming willing to live an entirely different way? At the 17th Jersey Shore Big Book Retreat in Long Branch, New Jersey, longtime A.A. speaker Mari G. of Toronto, Canada, presents a workshop on Steps One, Two, and Three—the foundation of recovery in Alcoholics Anonymous. Originally from Scotland and sober since August 1984, Mari brought more than 41 years of experience in A.A. to this gathering. Her recorded speaking history spans decades, including extensive presentations on the Twelve Steps at conventions, workshops, and recovery gatherings throughout North America. Mari's earlier recordings reflect the experience of someone who has not only lived through the challenges of alcoholism but spent years sharing the spiritual principles that helped change her life. STEPS ONE, TWO & THREE — THE FOUNDATION Step One — Powerlessness: Recognizing that we cannot control our drinking and that our lives have become unmanageable. Step Two — Coming to Believe: Becoming open to the possibility that a Power greater than ourselves can restore us to sanity. Step Three — The Decision: Making a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understand Him. These first three Steps ask us to confront some of the most difficult questions in recovery. Can we admit that our own efforts have failed? Can we become willing to believe that help is possible? And can we begin letting go of the self-will that has governed so much of our lives? The first three Steps don't require us to have all the answers. They ask us to become willing to begin. This presentation is part of the 17th Annual Jersey Shore Big Book Retreat, held May 29–31, 2026, in Long Branch, New Jersey. Whether you're beginning the Twelve Steps, returning to the Big Book, or sponsoring someone through early recovery, Mari's experience offers an opportunity to revisit the foundation of the A.A. program.
