Chappell Roan Just 'Chappelled' All Over Olivia Rodrigo's Expectations (And It's Perfect)

She does this thing that is SO '80s! My Olivia Rodrigo & Chappell Roan expectations reaction: Chappell's perfect '80s face and styling, the '80s sound they've brought in, and a retro game show hosted by David Byrne as Johnny Johnson. Then Chappell's brand-new verse, where every word is different. As a Grammy voting member and songwriter, the thing I love is that Chappell doesn't just sing Olivia's verse. Usually when a guest comes in on another version of a song, they sing the same thing in their own way, or change a few words. Here every word of verse 2 is different: a different scene, a different venue, different characters, and a date with a woman. And it changes the nature of the whole song. It isn't just about useless guys any more. Anyone we date could be equally flaky, and we should all have better expectations. I love that Chappell just Chappelled all over it. In this reaction I break down: 🎤 Olivia Rodrigo's no-nonsense first verse, and why I'd never dare write it that directly 🥁 The cross-rhythm trick that snaps you out of the listener's boredom threshold ✍️ Amy Allen, Dan Nigro and the songwriters behind expectations 💄 Chappell Roan's '80s styling (no one wears blusher like Chappell) 🔄 Chappell's verse vs Olivia's original verse 2: every word changed 💜 Why making it about a girl levels the playing field 🎶 What a post-chorus is, and how they're born in the studio 🎨 My colour report: Olivia's warm orange, Chappell's darker purple, a purple and orange fiesta Lots of you asked for more Olivia on my You're So Vain reaction, so here she is, with Chappell. They're like the dream team. I think we need a petition for a whole album together. Who's with me? And one of you told me Olivia has synesthesia too. She's said she sees colours for her songs, so I'd love to know if she sees orange here. 📺 More Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan on this channel: Olivia Rodrigo, You're So Vain (Carly Simon cover):    • Music Expert Reacts: Olivia Rodrigo's Take...   Chappell Roan, The Subway:    • Chappell Roan’s ‘The Subway’ Lyrics BROKE ...   ═════ CHAPTERS ═════ 0:00 Olivia Rodrigo & Chappell Roan: expectations reaction 1:47 Olivia's no-nonsense first verse 3:47 The cross-rhythm trick that stops you getting bored 5:19 Amy Allen, Dan Nigro and the writers behind it 6:27 Chappell Roan arrives: why she's SO '80s 8:22 Chappell's verse is completely different 10:15 Why making it about a girl changes the whole song 12:53 The chorus and that post-chorus, explained 15:15 Whistle notes and the dream team ending 16:24 My colour report: orange Olivia, purple Chappell 🎵 ORIGINAL VIDEO — Credit: OliviaRodrigoVEVO Olivia Rodrigo - expectations (feat.
