Phil Collins Venue: Prins van Oranjehal Location: Utrecht, Netherlands Date: April 1, 1994 Audience recording Audio Quality: B+ This is the opening show from Phil’s Both Sides of the World Tour. Many changes came for Phil including his band. Drummer, Chester Thompson from his last tour and for numerous tours with Genesis and Phil’s solo tours, will not be on drums this time. So Phil brings in Ricky Lawson to take over that role. Phil welcomes his friend Nathan East from his Eric Clapton touring years on bass and adds Amy Keys on vocals with Arnold McCuller returning on this tour. With the assassination of Don Myrick, Phil resets his horn section with the leadership of Harry Kim. The group that makes up the brass section will include Arturo Velasco on Trombone, Kim of course on Trumpet, Andrew Woofolk on Saxophone, and Daniel Fornero on Trumpet. They will be called the Vine St. Horns and most of them will work with Phil up until his last tour, Not Dead Yet. One of the biggest differences perhaps between Ricky on drums and Chester, is that Ricky really stays true to the original studio recordings and does not improv like Chester does. This could be because Phil keeps Ricky controlled on what he can and cannot do, but this is just my opinion. Let me know your opinions about the band. Now for many collectors the order of the setlist supposedly is “We Wait and We Wonder” and next is “One More Night”. However, I have always felt that this is inaccurate. Every show on this tour, the setlist has always followed the order as I placed it here. “One More Night”, “Groovy Kind of Love” and “We Wait and We Wonder”. So I simply put them in that order. Could it have been different since it was the Opening Show? Perhaps. It is just interesting because the songs are cut up and don’t seem to fit if you listen to them separately, but that’s just my opinion. Also it should be noted throughout this tour, I mentioned about Phil changing his image. This is clearly seen with hits like “One More Night” “Groovy Kind of Love” as well as “Against All Odds” on this show where he will usually drop the second verse of each song, almost to rush through them to get to the real songs he wants to play. Just my theory but again wanting to set the scene of why Both Sides’ music is more real Phil in comparison to his other albums. Also noteworthy and perhaps worth discussing in the comments is “Burn Down the Mission” and “The Way You Look Tonight”. Wow! “Burn Down the Mission” to me is so amazing! Sadly, this song as far as we know is dropped after this show. Some speculate that it was because the song was too difficult to play for the musicians. The real answer I believe is that it was too high for Phil to sing. Nevertheless he kills this amazing Taupin/John song. What do you think? “The Way You Look Tonight” is just as amazing, and yet simple cover! Granted you can hear someone yawning in the background on this audience recording which is annoying, but this person does not realize that this song won’t appear again until later in the tour. Phil will use both of these songs on his Unplugged performance, but like Everyday says neither song will ever “see the light of day”. Both songs supposedly were performed again on Unplugged and Phil will bring back The Way You Look Tonight in December 1994 (which I hope to get uploaded later) as a medley with “This Must Be Loved”. To me, this version of “The Way You Look Tonight” is special because it is just the song alone. Later Phil would perform this more on his second Big Band Tour and include Harry Kim offering a killer trumpet solo as well. Anyway, what is your opinion of this show? One other question among collectors is was “We Fly So Close” from performed live at this show? It is clear that the song was rehearsed numerous times. After consulting with some who attended this show, they said it was not, but some collectors still think it was performed. It would be amazing to hear! Were you at this show and was “We Fly So Close” played live? Enjoy this show and respond the questions in the comments section.Photograph from my tour t-shirt. 00:00 One More Night 04:04 Groovy Kind of Love 07:04 We Wait and We Wonder 14:46 I’ve Forgotten Everything 20:03 Both Sides of the Story 27:59 In The Air Tonight 35:19 Hang In Long Enough 40:06 Find A Way To My Heart (incomplete) 41:32 Easy Lover 46:54 Something Happened on the Way to Heaven 52:01 Band introduction 55:52 You Can't Hurry Love 58:54 Two Hearts 1:02:01 Sussudio (incomplete) 1:09:20 Burn Down The Mission 1:15:56 The Way You Look Tonight 1:18:41 Against All Odds 1:21:41 Take Me Home Musicians - Phil Collins - Drums / Vocals / Piano / Tambourine Brad Cole - Keyboards Nathan East - Bass / Vocals Amy Keys & Arnold McCuller - Vocals Ricky Lawson - Drums Daryl Stuermer - Guitars Vine St Horns Daniel Fornero - Trumpet Harry Kim - Trumpet Arturo Velasco - Trombone Andrew Woolfolk - Saxophone
