Mohamed Helmy introduces the FOCUS Framework (Framework for Optimal and Careful Use of AI in Science). Governments, funders, publishers, universities and research organisations have released many policies on generative AI in research, but they differ in scope and emphasis. FOCUS was developed through a systematic analysis of more than 100 such policies and guidelines. It comprises ten simple rules that guide researchers before, during and after their use of generative AI. The talk explains where existing guidelines agree and disagree, and how the rules address research integrity, transparency, privacy, authorship and plagiarism. Speaker: Mohamed Helmy (University of Saskatchewan) Talk title: The FOCUS Framework: Ten Simple Rules for Optimal and Careful Use of Generative AI in Science Session: Session 4 · Conditions for legitimate adoption Recorded at AI in Metascience 2026, an online conference organised by FORRT (Framework for Open and Reproducible Research Training), 28–30 September 2026.
