Dear Wickers, this is a general recipe for painting the tubes which slightly can be different depending on the varnish, the glaze and the tubes that you are using. In this video l used wood glaze and wood impregnator 1:2 ratio. But later, when I bought the same type of glaze in other colors, I sadly realized that there are very big differences within the same brand and type. They didn't gave the same result as the golden wood glaze shown in this video. There are also big differences between paints in different countries, not to mention that that they sell different marks in each country. Therefor it's difficult to gave an exact recipe. What l can say in general is that the tubes need a flexible covering layer. Either varnishes or glazes can provide this. So you need to coat the sticks with one of these, or combined.
This is a general recipe that doesn't always work the same way. I roll with a 1.6 cm rolling pin and the paper strips I use are 10 cm wide. l use 50 g/m2 white paper or 45 g/m2 advertising newspaper. Even such a small difference can be noticed in the painting. 45 g/m2 paper softens much faster, and thicker paper sometimes needs more time. The situation is also completely different if a thicker rolling pin is used, e.g. With 10 cm paper strips because then the tubes aren't so tight, stiff, dense. So these things all affect how flexible our stick will be. Unfortunately, the above mentioned glazes and varnishes also have different densities therefor we need to dilute the thicker ones more. If you don't manage to make a good wand, feel free to write me a comment under the video and I'll try to help you figure out what the problem might be. The important is the flexible cover and the stick wet from inside. You have to be careful that the ends of the sticks won't be too wet, because then you won't be able to glue them together therefor you can leave out the ends when wrapping them. l have a Facebook group : Korbetti papírfonás, please feel free to join and there it's easier to answer your questions, whatever language you speak Facebook has translater. l hope l could help with this explanation. Good luck with the painting!
