For Part 3 of our saddle overview series, we explore the different densities and types of foam used on different types of performance saddles. Higher end, race-oriented saddles for road cyclists are going to use a firmer foam throughout that's denser and will last longer, because the rider is typically seated for more of the ride and this helps hold them in the desired position.
For mountain bikers and adventure, touring and gravel cyclists, you'll often find a softer, thicker foam to help absorb more of the bumps.
Some saddles, like Prologo's, use variable density foams throughout the saddle to support the sit bones in the back, but feel better under the soft tissues in the middle and front.
