In 1966, Hollywood studio executives created The Monkees to exploit the commercial craze of Beatlemania through a weekly primetime TV comedy. The group was designed as a disposable pop commodity with songs tracked in secret by veteran session musicians, but the project quickly broke out of its sitcom container to outsell The Beatles and The Rolling Stones combined.
This episode follows Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork as they revolted against corporate music supervisor Don Kirshner to seize control of their own sound. It covers their battle for creative independence from the Beverly Hills Hotel standoff and their self-performed chart-topper Headquarters to their career-destroying cult film Head and how their profits secretly funded the New Hollywood cinematic revolution.
