Their first record, Saturday on Penny Lane, belonged to a Saturday afternoon — buses into town, record shops, wet pavements, young love and the feeling that anything might happen before midnight. This second album begins after that excitement has started to fade. The trains are moving. The shows are getting bigger. The letters arrive less often. Liverpool feels further away. And eventually, before dawn, there is one last ferry home. The songs remain short, direct and youthful: clean guitars, melodic bass, dry drums, tambourine, harmonica and close vocal harmonies. But something has changed. They left with songs in their pockets. They came home as strangers. THE MORNING TRAIN A train pulls away before the singer can say what he meant to say. Fast guitars make the departure sound more exciting than it feels. 2. SHE WAITED IN THE RAIN A friend tells him that the girl really did wait. Bright harmonies hide the loneliness underneath. 3. ANOTHER SATURDAY NIGHT Another town, another stage, another crowd. What once felt extraordinary is becoming routine. 4. WRITE ME A LINE No grand declaration is needed — just a few words in an envelope. One of the album’s simplest and most personal songs. 5. DON’T BELIEVE THE LIGHTS Photographs and stage lights make it seem as though the band has left its old life behind. The singer insists otherwise. 6. MERSEY, TAKE ME BACK Side One closes in a hotel room far from Liverpool. For the first time, the journey turns back toward home. 7. THE LAST FERRY HOME Cold wind, black water and distant harbour lights. He does not know what will be waiting. He only knows he has to return. 8. I SAW YOUR LIGHT A familiar window glows above a sleeping street. Is she still there? The song never gives a certain answer. 9. YOU WEREN’T THERE The answer comes at the door. The light was real, but the life he remembered was not. 10. THE OLD CAFÉ Everything looks almost unchanged, except someone else is sitting in their old corner. Home has quietly moved on. 11. YESTERDAY WE KNEW They once thought they understood love, success and the road ahead. Now they are less certain — and perhaps wiser. 12. WHEN THE HARBOUR LIGHTS GO DOWN Morning reaches the Mersey.
