20 years of operation with Mercedes benz Citaro Euro 3 buses!

Today, June 3, 2026, the Mercedes Benz Citaro Euro 3 buses have turned 20 years old since entering service.
The first Mercedes Benz Citaro Euro 3 bus, in the demo version, arrived in Bucharest in January 2006.
The first presentation and delivery of the bus were in April 2006.
The buses entered service on June 3, 2006, on the former line 131. The official presentation took place at Piața Presei.
As for equipment, the buses have 4-speed Voith engines, Euro 3 pollution standards, 26 seats and another 70 standing seats, LED displays. These are the first low-floor buses in Romania. Unfortunately, they are not equipped with air conditioning. In the meantime, they received air conditioning systems at the end of the 2000s and between 2018-2019. Unfortunately, no bus has a functional system anymore.
Initially, they had sliding windows, which were later replaced with another type of window to combat the heat in the summer season. The only bus with sliding windows left is 4402.
For 20 years, they have been reliable on the streets of Bucharest, although they are ovens on wheels during the summer, either due to poor maintenance by the company or due to tenure.
The Mercedes Benz Citaro Euro 3 4100 bus is the only one with yellow bars, currently preserved as a historical exponent.
In the late 2010s, there was a project to convert the buses into trolleybuses, CNG or electric buses. The project failed, and the only one that managed to be completed was 4116, abandoned since 2023.
Starting with 2024, 5 Mercedes Benz Citaro Euro 3 buses became commercial vehicles.
In the early 2010s, Mercedes Benz Citaro Euro 3 buses: 4190, 4191 or 4271 became school vehicles.
At present, approximately 130 buses are still in circulation, the others being stored at the Giulesti and Alexandria platforms, most likely awaiting scrapping.
Over time, in 2008, they purchased another 500 Mercedes Benz Citaro Euro 4 buses, and in 2020, another 130 Mercedes Benz Citaro Hybride buses. Soon, another 5 of the 30 Mercedes Benz Citaro G buses will arrive, through financial leasing.
