It rained all day. 40,000 Soviet soldiers marched into Red Square. At the head of the column, Marshal Georgy Zhukov rode a white stallion. Behind him, 200 men carried the captured battle standards of the German Wehrmacht. One by one, they threw the Nazi flags at the foot of Lenin's Tomb. The drums rolled with each one that fell. There were 200 flags. The Soviet Union had just spent 4 years losing 27 million of its people. Nearly 1 in 7 citizens. Every village had a memorial. Every family had an empty chair. 30 years later, in 1975, Boris Alexandrov — the man who had inherited the Red Army Choir from his father — sat down with the poet Andrey Dostal and wrote a marching song for the men who had walked in that rain. He called it "Шли Солдаты" — "There March The Soldiers." The song is about the road. The long road east to west. From the outskirts of Moscow to the ruins of Berlin. Through 4 winters of war. "Fly, song, like a swallow," goes the refrain, "over the distant roads, the glorious roads." In Russian folklore, the swallow is the bird that carries the souls of fallen soldiers back to their mothers in the spring. This is what the song is really about — not the victory, but the road home. The road the swallow flies when the soldier cannot. The third verse is a vow: "If it is needed, we will stand as a wall, guarding the home of our fathers."
