Cassie is the first of the new intake to arrive at Solar Blue with high hopes for the coming year, but from the start things don’t go as she imagined. Overburdened with luggage and excitement, she tries to call the Academy only to be met with an answering machine each time. Soon after arriving, she’s accosted by Adam, a surfer who offers to help — which Cassie is wary of, having been warned about strangers. Meanwhile, Angus Li, the new head of Solar Blue, reconnects with former student Bec Sanderson to set up a revamped structure for the Academy. Eventually, Cassie manages to reach the Solar Blue house — only to discover “Keep Out” signs and a less than warm welcome. Adam shows up again; though Cassie initially accuses him of stalking, he convinces her he’s part of the new class as well. They unpack and decide to test the waves, but their surf outing is witnessed by a neighbor, who alerts the police, assuming wrongdoing. At the same time, Bec officially begins her role back at Solar Blue, meeting the rest of the new students — Charley, Guy, Bridget, Loren — and starts wondering where Cassie and Adam have gone.
