Red door. 308 Main Street. Bandera, Texas. Go through the door. Walk down the wooden stairs. And step into 1921. Arkey Blue's Silver Dollar is the oldest continuously operating honky tonk in Texas. Built in 1921, this basement honky tonk has sawdust on the floor, a jukebox that still plays 45s, a table with Hank Williams Sr.'s name carved into it, and Arkey Blue's first Sears & Roebuck guitar hanging on the wall. Every Saturday night at 8 o'clock, Arkey Blue himself walks out on that stage with his Blue Cowboys. He's been doing it since 1968. Fifty-seven years and counting. Robert Earl Keen wrote "Feelin' Good Again" at this bar. Willie Nelson has played here. Someone once brought a longhorn steer in through the red door. Arkey nearly lit a barstool on fire playing a prank. The City of Bandera renamed Main Street "Arkey Blue's Silver Dollar Highway." The walls look like a cowboy museum — wild boar heads, street signs, gun holsters, a Dolly Parton pinball machine, a vintage wooden phone booth. Every inch a story. Every story true. This is the Cowboy Capital of the World's best-kept secret and best-known treasure.
