How a Legendary 1977 Concert Sparked a Global Movement

Between 1977 and 1987, the Grateful Dead concert became something bigger than a live music event. It became a ritual. This chapter of Grateful Dead history begins with May 8, 1977 at Cornell University, a concert whose legendary Betty Board recording spread through the Deadhead tape-trading network and became one of the most famous live recordings in rock history. But Cornell was only part of the story. Over the next decade, Grateful Dead fans built an entire culture around following the band. Tape trees and cassette trading preserved performances. Drums and Space became a familiar part of the live experience. The 1980 Warfield Theatre and Radio City Music Hall runs turned the Dead’s acoustic and electric concerts into Reckoning, Dead Set, and Dead Ahead. Mail-order tickets, handwritten index cards, telephone hotlines, and the official tapers’ section created an information and distribution network largely outside the traditional music industry. By the mid-1980s, Deadheads didn’t simply attend Grateful Dead shows. They knew how the system worked. Then everything nearly stopped. Jerry Garcia’s diabetic coma in July 1986 threatened the future of the band. His recovery and return to the stage turned survival into part of the story. Less than a year later, “Touch of Grey” reached MTV, In the Dark became the Grateful Dead’s commercial breakthrough, and millions of people who had never traded a tape, mailed an index card, or called the Grateful Dead hotline suddenly knew the band.
