Where Unsold Clothes Really Go

What happens to clothing that reaches the end of a season without ever being sold? Some garments move to clearance racks, outlets, liquidators, donation programs, overseas resale markets, or recycling facilities. Others can travel through several of those systems before ultimately being incinerated, dumped, or buried in a landfill—sometimes without ever being worn. This video follows the hidden afterlife of one unsold shirt and explains why clothing companies produce more inventory than shoppers buy, why donation does not always guarantee reuse, why most clothing is difficult to recycle into new clothing, and how textile waste can simply be exported somewhere else. We also examine the European Union's new prohibition on the destruction of most unsold clothing by large companies, which entered into application in July 2026. Regulators estimate that 4–9% of textile products placed on the European market had been destroyed before use. The problem is larger than one shirt in the trash.
